{"id":294,"date":"2012-08-03T16:33:37","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T20:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yourfaircreditlawyernow.com\/?p=294"},"modified":"2021-01-01T17:43:35","modified_gmt":"2021-01-01T22:43:35","slug":"3-notices-from-the-irs-indicating-an-identity-theft-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yourfaircreditlawyernow.com\/?p=294","title":{"rendered":"3 Notices From The IRS Indicating An Identity Theft Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Identity theft involving IRS tax returns has become an ever increasing problem over the last four years.\u00a0According to Treasury Department reports, more than five billion dollars in improper refund checks may have been issued to identity thieves in 2011 alone.\u00a0 If you have an IRS identity theft problem, the agency has established a procedure to assist victims\u00a0on\u00a0the <a title=\"IRS Identity Theft Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/article\/0,,id=251501,00.html\">identity theft\u00a0page of the IRS\u00a0website<\/a>. As identified on the IRS website, three types of IRS notices can indicate that you may have an identity theft problem with the IRS. The three notices or letters indicating a problem are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You filed more than one return.<\/li>\n<li>You have a balance due, refund offset, or collection action for a year that you did not file a return.<\/li>\n<li>You received wages from an employer that you do not recognize.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">If you receive any of these notices and think that you may be a victim of identity theft, the IRS requests that you take immediate action via an <a title=\"IRS Identity theft affidavit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f14039.pdf\">IRS identity theft affidavit<\/a>.\u00a0 The details regarding how to complete the affidavit and more information about the process can be found on the IRS website.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">If I believed that I had an IRS identity theft problem, after notifying the IRS,\u00a0 I would also immediately <a title=\"How do I get a free copy of my credit report?\" href=\"https:\/\/yourfaircreditlawyernow.com\/?p=162\">obtain a copy of all three of my credit reports <\/a>from the credit reporting agencies and look for the <a title=\"Help, I MIGHT have been a victim of identity theft!\" href=\"https:\/\/yourfaircreditlawyernow.com\/?p=118\">signs\u00a0indicating an\u00a0identity theft problem <\/a>on\u00a0my credit file.
